The Blackwell Law Firm is investigating claims of personal injury and death related to the drug Xarelto. Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is a relatively new anti-coagulant (blood thinner). The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) initially approved Xarelto in July 2011 for use following knee and hip surgery to reduce the risks of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In November 2011, the FDA approved the drug for additional use as an anti-coagulant in individuals with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. In November 2012, the FDA extended approval to patients with DVT and pulmonary embolism as well as for long-term treatment to prevent recurrence. What is Xarelto?
For decades, Coumadin (Warfarin) served as an effective medication for anti-coagulant treatment in Huntsville. Xarelto was marketed as better than Warfarin which required monitoring and dietary restrictions.
Since its introduction, many adverse event reports have been submitted suggesting a relationship between Xarelto and injuries due to uncontrollable bleeding. While the blood thinning effects of Warfarin could be reversed if needed, Xarelto has no similar reversal agent. Because of this, uncontrollable bleeding may result.
In 2012, the Huffington Post published an article detailing concerns of top heart doctors related to new blood thinners Xarelto and Pradaxa. In the last couple years, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has reported in QuarterWatch the large number of adverse event reports involving Xarelto. A February 2015 Slate article asks the question – “Are Your Medications Safe.” The Slate article details two large clinical trials used to gain FDA approval of Xarelto and contends the studies may have been tainted by falsified data.
